Assessment Policy
To outline the process, responsibilities, and expectations for STAR 1–5 assessments and STAR 6–Gold test days, in alignment with Skate Canada’s STAR Assessment and Test Program and Skate Ontario requirements.
STAR 1–5 Testing (Coach-Delivered Assessments)
-
Skaters who have completed CanSkate Stages 1–6 move into the STAR Program.
-
STAR 1–5 assessments are coach-assessed during regular sessions, following Skate Canada’s STAR 1–5 assessment standards.
-
Each assessment costs $12, which is the standard fee charged by Skate Canada. Parents will receive an invoice for this fee by email from the club. Once the fee is paid, the test will be submitted to the Skate Canada database.
-
The skater’s private coach determines readiness and communicates directly with the parent/guardian.
-
The assessment sheet is split into:
-
Part 1 (top portion) – removed and submitted to the Skate Wheatley Assessment Chair for record-keeping and submission to Skate Canada.
-
Part 2 (bottom portion) – given to the skater as a report of the assessment and should be kept for their own records
STAR 6–Gold Testing ( Skate Canada Judge Assessments)
-
Skaters who complete STAR 1–5 move into the STAR 6–Gold, which uses external assessment days with trained evaluators (or judge evaluators assigned per Skate Canada policy).
-
Readiness is determined by the private coach, who may register the skater for an upcoming Assessment Day. Assessment Days are scheduled in advance and are held on regular skating days; regular skating sessions may be cancelled to accommodate the full assessment schedule.
-
Each STAR 6–Gold assessment costs $20 (includes Skate Canada fee + club administration fee) and is to be paid the day of the assessment by e-transfer or cash.
-
Coaches will notify parents/guardians in advance if a skater is being registered.
Withdrawals & Cancellations
-
If a skater cannot attempt an assessment (coach withdraws, injury, illness, conflict):
-
The skater must be removed from the tentative test list before the final test list is posted (typically 1–2 weeks before the scheduled Assessment Day).
-
If the skater remains on the final test list, the following applies:
-
The skater is expected to try the assessment and pay the $20 fee
-
If the skater does not attend Assessment Day, the assessment must still be paid, and will be entered as a Retry in the Skate Canada system, per national policy.
-
In cases of injury or illness, a doctor’s note provided to the Assessment Chair may exempt the skater from payment and avoid a Retry being entered.
-
Any other exceptions must be reviewed and approved by the Assessment Chair and the Board.
Records & Administration
-
All test sheets and submissions are kept by the Assessment Chair in accordance with:
-
Skate Canada retention guidelines
-
Skate Wheatley’s Record Retention Policy
-
Test fees are tracked and remitted as required by Skate Canada.
Fairness & Compliance
-
Skate Wheatley is committed to a transparent, fair, and organized assessment process for all skaters.
-
Testing and assessments will follow:
-
Skate Canada STAR Assessment and Assessment Program policies
-
Skate Ontario guidelines
-
Skate Wheatley’s Code of Conduct
-
Skaters and families are expected to support the process by maintaining open communication with their private coach and paying required fees promptly.
