Concussion Policy / Rowan’s Law
To protect the safety and long‑term health of all skaters by ensuring quick action, proper medical care, and clear steps to return to skating after a suspected or diagnosed concussion.
Who this policy applies to:
All Skate Wheatley skaters, parents/guardians, coaches, officials, volunteers, and staff during any club programs, sessions, events, or activities.
What is a concussion?

A brain injury caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head, face, neck, or body

Symptoms may be physical (e.g., headache), mental (e.g., confusion), emotional (e.g., irritability), or related to sleep

May appear right away or over hours/days; may happen with or without loss of consciousness.
Key steps if a concussion is suspected:

Immediate removal

Skater must immediately stop skating and leave the ice or activity

If there is an emergency or “red flag” symptoms, call 911

If skater is under 18, parent/guardian will be contacted right away

Medical assessment

Skater must see a doctor or nurse practitioner

Skater cannot return until cleared in writing

Return to sport

If a concussion is confirmed, the skater must follow Skate Ontario’s graduated Return-to-Sport protocol

Written medical clearance must be given to the Head Coach/Coach Liaison (Designated Person) before resuming full participation

Concussions can have serious, lasting effects. Skate Wheatley follows Skate Canada and Skate Ontario policies, Rowan’s Law, and ONCA requirements to:

Responsibilities:
All skaters, parents/guardians, coaches, volunteers, and staff must:

Learn to recognize concussion signs and symptoms

Report suspected concussions right away

Follow medical advice and club/Skate Ontario protocols

This policy is to be read in conjunction with the Skate Canada Incidents of Injury Reporting and Management Policy as well as the Skate Ontario Removal-from-Sport Protocol, the Skate Ontario Return To-Sport Protocol, and in compliance with Rowan’s Law.
