Helmet Use Policy
To keep all beginner and developing skaters safe and reduce the risk of head injuries, as required by Skate Canada.
-
All skaters who have not achieved Stage 5 of CanSkate or who lack good balance/control must wear a CSA-approved hockey helmet while on the ice
-
This policy applies at every club session, special event, regardless of skater age or previous skating experience
-
Face masks on helmets are optional but recommended for young skaters
Why only CSA-approved hockey helmets?
-
They are specifically designed to protect against falls and collisions on ice
-
Other types (e.g., bike helmets) are not permitted
Helmet fit & care:
-
Must fit snugly and sit about one finger above the eyebrows
-
Must have a secure chin strap and be in good condition (not cracked, damaged, or missing parts)
-
Helmets older than five years or previously involved in a major impact should not be used
-
The CSA certification sticker must be visible on the helmet
No waivers:
-
Parents/guardians cannot sign a waiver to skip this requirement. It is a Skate Canada policy and must be followed by all clubs
Enforcement:
-
Coaches will check helmets before each session
-
If a required skater does not have a CSA-approved hockey helmet, they will not be allowed on the ice until properly equipped
-
Coaches are supported by the club and Skate Canada in enforcing this rule
Tips to reduce falls & injuries:
-
Wear properly fitted and sharpened skates
-
Avoid scarves or loose clothing
-
Warm up before skating
-
Learn how to fall safely and get up
-
Respect on-ice rules:
-
No pushing, tag, or horseplay
-
Keep rink doors closed during sessions
-
No gum or candy on the ice
-
Keep first aid kit accessible
